The Visual Patient Avatar connection

In the section “Anatomical or metaphorical displays”, the review describes animated patient avatars and their potential to support situation awareness and reduce cognitive workload. References 17–19 include the 2023 review by Gasciauskaite and colleagues, the distraction study by Pfarr and colleagues, and the ICU study by Bergauer and colleagues. The latter specifically evaluated Visual Patient Avatar ICU in computer-based scenarios. Participants retrieved more information, reported greater diagnostic confidence and experienced lower perceived workload than with conventional monitoring.
